There are three things that every family or individual needs in order to be fully prepared.
1. Family Disaster Plan
2. Disaster Kits
3. Food Storage
Many people believe that if they have their "72 hour kit" they are prepared. That is not the case. If an emergency happens, do you and you family know what to do and where to go? For every disaster it's different. If you are all separated, how can you get in contact with each other? You have your kit, but now what do you do? Those, and many more, are the questions that a Family Disaster Plan will answer.
Often when a disaster occurs, the victims are left without either electricity, water, gas, or all of the above. Sometimes victims are required to evacuate. What will you do? A disaster kit will have the things in it that you and your family need to be able to survive during that period of time.
For many years people have heard that they should have a "72 hour kit." It is now suggested that 72 hours is not long enough and that kits should be equiped with provisions for 5 days. For this reason we refer to these kits as "disaster kits."

It is suggested that families have 1 year's worth of stored food. There are many reasons for this. I will not go into them all here, but I will make one point. Should you ever, for any reason, be unable to purchase food, your family will still be taken care of.
If a disaster does occur it is possible that you would be unable to purchase food from the store, either from a shortage in the stores or your own inability to get there. Having a food supply in your home will protect your family.
